Types of Aid
Humanitarian Aid--
Due to the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan and South Sudan, the European Commission is boosting its humanitarian assistance by €30 million for both countries. The main concern is the ever increasing number of refugees and displaced people fleeing the conflict area of South Kordofan and Blue Nile State in Sudan, mainly to South Sudan and Ethiopia. In Sudan, the delivery of aid is extremely difficult due to restricted access. In some parts of Sudan, humanitarian workers are not allowed to reach hundreds of thousands victims of conflict. After nine years of conflict in Darfur, there are still 3.5 million people dependent on humanitarian assistance. It will support immediate life-saving activities such as distributing essential food and non-food items, as well as providing shelter, health, protection, water, hygiene and sanitation. The assistance will reach the most vulnerable people including refugees, returnees and internally displaced people.

Development Aid--
The United Kingdom has been providing development aid to Sudan for many, many years. Recently, they have changed their development aid that focus more on providing clean water, women’s education and justice, and health programs and food security. The recently announced package of aid also includes nutrition support for 10 million people across North and South Sudan; food security and freedom from hunger for 1 million people; access to justice for 250,000 women; and malaria prevention or treatment for 750,000 people. British Officials stressed that the funded projects intend to move from dependency on humanitarian aid and for the Sudanese to lead independent and productive lives, eventually.
It appears that both types of aid have actually helped Sudan and its people. In the article provided below, it states and supports several ways in which Africa as a whole has already greatly improved over the past 10 years. Humanitarian aid has helped Sudan in a way that Sudan and South Sudan have actually made a recent agreement regarding border disputes in order to save those that have been radically displaced between the two countries. Their agreement with one another has dramatically improved the relations between the Sudanese people thus reducing civil conflicts. Development aid has had a great influence on Sudan since it has provided the people with access to clean water and health services. Furthermore, due to greater involvement in education, women are becoming stronger within the workforce and thus have subtly been able to redeem from their poverty status.

Non-Government Organization (NGO)--
MERLIN is a non government organization that has been working closely with Sudan since 2004. This organization has done a number of things that have improved Sudan and has contributed to its economic growth and development.
Some of the efforts they have achieved include:

- Keeping 14 clinics open and functioning during recent violence in Darfur
- Reaching 43,000 people every three months with vital community health and hygiene promotion messages
- Continuing to support and rehabilitate two hospitals and nine health facilities in South Sudan, reaching over 50,000 people every three months

This non government organization has done an extensive amount of good will for the Sudanese people. Greater access to health services has greatly improved Sudan’s economic development since they have been improving maternal and child health. Healthier families allow the people to find work and provide an income for their family. In addition, access to health services provides and education on the prevention of diseases such as HIV/AIDs and malaria that have caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in Sudan. Economic growth has greatly improved as well. MERLIN has invested much of their time in building latrines and installing reliable water supplies thus improving the country’s infrastructure.
